This week was filled with all kind of heart-breaking losses. The top seated teams were overthrown by the underdogs, which ultimately brought the end to their Championship run.
It all started out with the Old Colony Lady Cougars. It started falling downhill at the practice before game night. Coach Lincoln "had a bad feeling going into this game because of how bad the practice was." Nichole Mareiro, the Cougars' leading scorer and South Coast's top 3-point shooter, was able to score only nine points, which left the Lady Cougars scratching their heads and wondering who would be the hero that saves the game? To the Lady Cougars' disappointment, no heroes appeared to save the day. Instead, the towering Norfolk Aggie Rams, who out-rebounded the Lady Cougars 49-27, walked away with a victory of 45-18.
This was the second time that Norfolk Aggie dashed the Old Colony's dream of advancing further into the post season, and this is the second time that the Lady Cougars had a good regular season, but lost their swagger in the post-season. With only two seniors leaving this year, Coach Lincoln is hoping that his players would return with more experience and improved talent, so next year they won't have to watch somebody walk away with their dream.
Another team that couldn't make their shots was the Lady Bulldogs, and believe it or not, their bad luck also started with a practice before the game. During the Wednesday night's practice, as the Lady Bulldogs were running though different plays, both, Erica Belmore and Lauren O'Brien, went for the rebound but on the way down, Erica Belmore stepped on O'Brien's ankle, while her body was facing the opposite way. O'Brien heard a crack as she fell on the floor and knew that it was not good. She knew that there was not a chance that she would play on Friday night against Westwood, but was hoping to play in the next game, if the Lady Bulldogs beat Westwood. When Friday night's game rolled around, O'Brien was a true team member - she put on her uniform and supported her team while sitting on the bench. However, she could not help but cover her eyes, filled with tears, as she looked at the final score, 33-53. The Lady Bulldogs were defeated.
It was a very emotional loss, because the Lady Bulldogs really felt like they could go all the way this year. However, the Lady Bulldogs are the type of team that always bounces back and comes back stronger than ever, so they are planning on reloading with fresh talent and bring the SCC title home next year.
Whether it was a rebuilding year for the ORR/Fairhaven Ice Hockey team or not, there was no denying the fact that they were good. They played well as a team, and despite the fact that ORR and Fairhaven are big rivals, they shared the puck, and the underclassmen proved that they could hang with the upperclassmen when they were called upon. However, all that seemed to disappear, as they took on Medway on Thursday night at Tabor Academy. Medway wore ORR/Fairhaven out, which allowed them to score two goals and skate away with a 2-1 victory over ORR/Fairhaven. Gage Silva put his team on the scoreboard, but with Ray Lawton riding the box for the final minute due to four penalties, the ORR/Fairhaven team had no other chance to score, leaving them with a heartbreaking loss. Fortunately, the team is graduating only two seniors this year, Gage Silva and Eric Xavier, so next year they can focus on truly rebuilding themselves and become tough contenders.
